Johnny Remember Me

This 1961 No.1 was banned by the BBC as it was a song about death.

It sounds so very Sixties, and was producer Joe Meek’s first No.1 single.

In about 1970, I was given a record player of my own. It was a bit like a Dansette, with a removable hinged lid. I’m pretty sure it was this ‘Westminster’ model.

It was my first music player, of which I have very fond memories.  And yes, when I Googled to find out about it, I placed a bid on ebay!

I was also given a set of 7” singles, including this one.

Others were ‘Up on the Roof’ by Kenny Lynch, and ‘Roses of Picardy’ by Vince Hill.  You can see why I picked the John Leyton record.

Other records that I remember, which may have been acquired later, were the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s ‘Dr. Who Theme’, Bobby Sherman’s ‘Julie, Do You Love Me?’, Benny Hill’s ‘Ernie, the Fastest Milkman in the West’, and Clive Dunn’s ‘Grandad’.

Today (26/4/12), I downloaded Rufus Wainwright’s latest album, so not too much damage was done;-)

I didn’t win the auction for the gramophone, but I’ll be keeping an eye out for another!
