I have a friend in China, who tells me that the Government there doesn’t allow web surfers to access YouTube.
He wanted to listen to the latest Rufus Wainwright track I had put in New Music, but it was blocked.
I got around this for him by posting up a ‘QuickTime’ player with the track embedded.
I don’t do this type of posting regularly, as it infringes the copyright of the owner of the music, whilst a YouTube link doesn’t. However, I’m sure most of the musicians I like, would turn a blind eye to this minor infringement, since it is done in the name of a good cause - ie pleasing Chinese residents by allowing them access to music, and probably annoying the Chinese Government at the same time.
It will be interesting to see if my site gets banned in China. I would consider it an achievement!
Below are some links to tracks on this web site that are playable in China.
The first set are within this section, and have been requested from behind the Bamboo Curtain. The second are to pages that have such a track embedded in them already.
And if the Chinese Government are reading this - Edinburgh Zoo would like to say ‘Thank You’ for the pandas, but can you send us a straight pair next time?
